Cholesteryl Ester Transfer Protein (CETP) is a protein that transports cholesterol throughout the body, and boost levels of good cholesterol HDL (High Density Lipoprotein). The gene is capable of controlling bad cholesterol LDL (Low Density Lipoprotein) in the blood.
Researchers reported their findings in the Journal of the American Medical Association. Previous research suggests that CETP activity would bring cardiovascular benefits by raising HDL, which can reduce heart disease.
"Although this gene is very good for the body, but researchers still have to find exactly what do these genes to the brain. Clearly, people who have CETP gene showed a better outcome," said neurologist Dr. Richard Lipton of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York. (Thirdage)
